Left concert alone to walk back to her hotel. She went along a path that would have been a walking route from the concert, where she'd been with her friends, back to her hotel a few miles away. Earthly body located. Prayers for her family and friends.
• PETALUMA, Calif. (KGO) -- Investigators in the South Lake Tahoe area announced Friday a tragic ending to the search for missing 19-year-old Alyssa Byrne of Petaluma. Alyssa's body was discovered Friday morning not far from a music festival she attended at Lake Tahoe Community College on New Year's Eve. She had told friends she was heading back to the Horizon Casino in Stateline, Nevada.
At a scheduled press conference, Douglas County Undersheriff Paul Howell quickly and calmly revealed the heart-breaking news, explaining that around 8:30 a.m., a utility worker in South Lake Tahoe found a body about 10 feet from the roadway, over a snow bank. The terrible news came just as family, friends, and businesses in Petaluma were gearing up to support the efforts to find Alyssa.
"We just in the last few moments confirmed the identity of Alyssa. I've notified her father, and the investigation continues. At this time, we still don't suspect any foul play and any inquiries as to cause of death and that will be at a later time by the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office," Howell said. He also said Alyssa's body had no outward signs of trauma, that she was wearing the clothes she was last seen in, and that her body was not covered.
Her body was found along a path that would have been a walking route from the concert, where she'd been with her friends, back to her hotel a few miles away. In fact, investigators say many people were making that same walk because apparently, there were long lines for the shuttle buses that had been provided. The utility worker was only able to see Alyssa's body beyond the snow bank because he was in an elevated truck. Authorities don't know why Alyssa might have climbed over the snow bank.
Investigators are still looking for the last people to see Alyssa alive and no longer believe anyone talked to her at the hotel after the concert. Witnesses who originally said that must have been mistaken.
